2182 Vessel: A Speculative Vase Redefining the Wine Drinking Experience

An Innovative Design by Xiangzhi Zhao

In a contemporary era rich with materialism, Xiangzhi Zhao's 2182 Vessel aims to make people enjoy the taste of wine earnestly and meticulously through its innovative design. This speculative vase, also known as a wine glass, offers a unique and immersive drinking experience that combines art, craftsmanship, and functionality.

The inspiration for the 2182 Vessel came from the profound impact that the shape of a wine glass has on the user's sense of taste and smell. Zhao studied various existing wine glasses during the design process to determine the ideal shape and the wine types it would be suitable to contain.

What sets the 2182 Vessel apart is its distinctive feature of a large opening shared by four different types of glasses. This design allows for the quick diffusion of aromas, enhancing the olfactory experience and captivating the senses of smell and taste. The upper part of the glass is designed with the shallow depth reminiscent of the Tazza cup, a symbol of social status in 16th-century Italy. Drinking from such a shallow glass requires both superb craftsmanship and the drinker's undivided attention, elevating the overall drinking experience.

The 2182 Vessel is made of ceramic materials, adding to its aesthetic appeal and providing a unique tactile experience. With dimensions of 50mm in width, 50mm in depth, and 140mm in height, this vase-like wine glass is a true work of art.

The drinking process with the 2182 Vessel consists of two stages: the stage in the shallow upper part and the stage in the deep lower part. When the drinker starts to enjoy the wine in the upper part, the large opening of the glass facilitates the quick diffusion of aromas, enhancing the olfactory experience. As the drinker progresses to the lower part, the small diameter in the middle reduces the oxidation rate of the wine, ensuring that the taste remains unchanged.

The 2182 Vessel project began in October 2021 in London and was completed in February 2022 in Jingdezhen. Throughout the design process, Xiangzhi Zhao conducted extensive research to create a ceramic structure that encourages drinkers to focus more on the drinking process and enhances their overall experience.

This innovative design faced several challenges, particularly in designing a wine glass specifically tailored to contain premium champagne. Zhao referenced four glass shapes, namely "Patera," "Kylix," "Tazza cup," and "champagne coupe," to create a shape that combines the best features of each.

The 2182 Vessel has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious accolade is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The 2182 Vessel stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

Xiangzhi Zhao's 2182 Vessel is a testament to the power of design in transforming everyday experiences. By reimagining the wine glass, this speculative vase offers a unique and immersive drinking experience that combines artistry, craftsmanship, and functionality. With its elegant design and attention to detail, the 2182 Vessel invites wine enthusiasts to savor their favorite wines in a whole new way.
